The music in Rune Factory 4 is one of my favorite parts of the game. Of course, I love video game music in general, but the emotion I feel from this game is something truly incredible. Not many games can make me cry, laugh, and overjoyed at the same time just because of the music (never mind the fact that I am an emotional person in general). Because of this I felt a need to talk a bit about the music of this game.
From what I've been able to find there is oddly no official soundtrack for this game, which is honestly a bit disappointing, and a bit strange as I've found information about some drama CD's. Regardless, I have found that the music in Rune Factory 4 was composed by Tomoko Morita. There does not seem to be a whole lot of information about her, which is a shame because from what music I've heard by her she is amazing. In addition to Rune Factory 4 she was responsible for composing the music for the entire Rune Factory series and for a couple games in the Shining series, including Shining Force Neo and Shining Force EXA. She also appeared to have worked for Neverland and was born in Yokote, Akita Prefecture, Japan. Her birthday is unknown.
I would consider the music from Rune Factory 4 to be one of my favorite game soundtracks of all time, ranking among my absolute favorites, such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and World of Warcraft. I consider it such a rare treat when music can make me feel such strong emotion where I can't help but smile or cry whenever listening to some songs. Now that I've talked a bit about the music, how about I tell you about some of my favorite songs? Not listing these in any particular order because it is impossible to rank them.
Kaze no Traveler | listen to song
This is the opening theme of the game. Whenever I start up Rune Factory 4 I always find myself wanting to watch the whole video just so I can listen to the song instead of skipping it so I can get right into the game. I love the melody of it and I love the lyrics. I've tried listening to past theme songs for the series and none of them can hold a candle to this one.
Tears of the Elder Dragon | listen to song
If you want a song that rips your heart out and stomps on it, and makes you cry endless rivers then this is the song for you. I've drenched many a shirt sleeve whenever this song would play in-game. When I'm listening to it not in game the tears are pretty close to coming out too. It completely breaks me. It's all that stupid dragon's fault.
Sadness | listen to song
To be honest I think this song breaks me more than Tears of the Elder Dragon does. I remember listening to this song during the marriage event involving Arthur and I can't help but break whenever I hear it as my mind always goes to him and the struggles he's had to deal with all his life. It is a very emotional song and one I can't help but love.
Winter | listen to song
Normally I hate winter music in any game with seasonal music, because I often find it boring, but I would have to say this time that it would be my favorite seasonal song. While most sound depressing and dreary, in Rune Factory 4 it actually sounds cheerful. This song actually makes me excited for winter (this coming from a person who hates winter).
Love at First Sight | listen to song
This is the song Margaret is always heard playing. Apparently there is a bit of a back story with it which you can learn during an event with her and Dolce. After having done it and soaking my shirt sleeve to the point where I couldn't see the screen made me love the song so much. Now I find myself just sitting and listening to Margaret whenever she plays it.
Versus Ragnarok | listen to song
This fight is an absolute bitch, but the music for it is amazing. It gives me a feeling that the end is near and hope is right around the corner. Part of it is likely because Rune Prana is so ridiculously long but also because it took blood, sweat and tears (quite literally) to make it that far. The final area of Rune Prana actually gives off that kind of vibe too. I like it.
Rune Prana Final Area | listen to song
I love this song to bits. I find it's one of those few songs I can listen to for hours on end and not get bored of it quickly. This song gives me such a strong sense of hope and that the seemingly never ending struggle is coming to an end, which is very true in this case because Rune Prana takes FOREVER to do, and can kick your ass if you're not careful.
